Van Rensselaer Square

Overview

Van Rensselaer Square is a 35-acre site planned for commercial and retail development with shops, restaurants, and banks. We are performing all sitework at the development, to be located at Routes 4 and 43 in a suburban area near Albany, NY.

Challenge

The project presented special challenges in rock excavation. Coordinating closely with a subcontractor, we moved 300,000 cubic yards of material in three months. Another challenge was scheduling, coordinating, and constructing the road widening at the intersection of Routes 4 and 43, which was required by the NYS Department of Transportation.

Solution

Coordination between owner, engineer, contractor, and subcontractors resulted in an efficiency that enabled us to maintain the schedule as well as a high quality of work. Highlights of the project include clearing and grubbing, removing trees and their stumps from more than seven acres; blasting and excavating 300,000 cubic yards of material; and installing more than 4,000 feet of sanitary sewer line, 1 mile of storm drainage, and 1.1 miles of water main line.

Result

The development of this 35-acre site, which commenced in August 2007, is now 75 percent complete. Because of careful planning and teamwork, Van Rensselaer Square continues to move smoothly toward its completion date of early fall 2008.

“This project is an excellent example of all parties working together.”
