Exit 12 Roundabouts

Overview

This ambitious undertaking included a total of five roundabouts, three at Exit 12 of the Adirondack Northway (I-87), north of Albany, NY, and two at Routes 9 and 67. With an aggressive schedule, the project was completed a year ahead of schedule, resulting in a smooth flow of traffic through this increasingly busy suburban area.

Challenge

Two of the roundabouts, off Exit 12 of the Adirondack Northway, were to be constructed in an 18-day period. The bridge and highway were closed during this period. Working around-the-clock, Rifenburg completed these roundabouts in 11 days, seven days ahead of schedule. At Routes 9 and 67, Rifenburg completed two roundabouts in seven days, five days ahead of schedule.

Solution

Despite inclement weather, planning and coordination enabled us to exceed scheduling expectations. In some instances, we worked with traffic, moving it to one side as we completed half of a roundabout; in other cases, when roads were closed to traffic, we accelerated our schedule to prevent the least inconvenience to commuters.

Result

Today, traffic at Exit 12 of the Adirondack Northway and the intersection (now roundabout) of Routes 9 and 67 flows smoothly. The project design and construction, which called for a mix of paving materials including a red-colored synthetic imprint with a brick pattern, was seamlessly implemented to the satisfaction of town officials and commuters.

“Because of teamwork, we completed the job efficiently.”
